Fountain pens
The nib is the pen and the filling system is the rest of it. Gold is softer than steel and costs more; a piston or vacuum filler holds far more ink than a cartridge and cannot take one. Japanese nibs run a size finer than German ones, so a Japanese medium writes like a European fine, which is the thing most first buyers get wrong.
