Rancilio Silvia E V6
Rancilio · £589
Nice, but
A commercial-size portafilter and a brass group in a machine people keep running for twenty years; the Silvia is the one everybody learns on, and it holds its value because it refuses to die. What it does not have is temperature control, so you learn to time shots around the heating cycle, a ritual the coffee world calls temperature surfing and nobody enjoys. Buy it if you want the fiddling; buy the Profitec GO at £849 if you want the espresso.

What we checked
- The retailer states a single boiler and a 2 litre water tank. Bella Barista
- Because the boiler swings between brew and steam temperatures, owners have to time their shots around the heating cycle; a reviewer describes the practice as considerably more tedious in life than in theory. Coffee Chronicler
- The same retailer sells a Profitec GO at £849 whose stated features include the PID temperature control the Silvia lacks. Bella Barista
