The canvas is the part of a jacket nobody sees and the only part that decides whether it still fits the shape of your chest in ten years: it is a layer the wool is stitched to rather than glued to, so it moulds to you instead of resisting you. Flannel is the forgiving winter cloth, soft-handled and warm, and the trouser comes unfinished to be tailored to your leg.
