Modern Beaufort Waxed Jacket

Barbour · £349

A navy waxed cotton jacket with a corduroy collar and detachable hood, shown from the front.

Worth being NRY provisional

Still made in England, still waxed cotton, and Barbour will re-wax it rather than sell you another one, which is why Beauforts get handed down instead of replaced. The Modern cut adds a detachable hood and a quilted lining, so it sits at the warmer end of the range. Waxed cotton sheds a shower and gives up in a downpour: treat it as a coat, not a shell.

For
Someone who wants one coat for the next decade and will send it back for re-waxing every couple of years.
Not for
Anyone who needs to stay dry on a hill, or who would rather never think about maintaining a jacket.

What we checked

  • A long-term reviewer states the Beaufort is still made in England, and is among the last Barbour jackets that is. Stridewise
  • Barbour will re-wax the jacket for owners who send it back, and it is not machine washable. Stridewise

Marked provisional: the justification rests on 1 source(s); two independent ones is the bar; no primary source supports the justification (§8: primary sources for facts). We publish it anyway and say so, rather than waiting for evidence that may never arrive.
